Laptop Will Not Charge? Heres Why
Most “wont charge” issues are caused by the charger, the battery, or the charging port — usually fixable. Here is how to figure out which.
Try These First
A laptop that wont charge usually has one of three issues: a bad charger, a failed battery, or a damaged charging port. The diagnostic process is straightforward.
- Try a different power outlet
- Inspect the charging cable for damage or fraying
- Wiggle the connection at the laptop end — if it charges sometimes, the port may be loose
- Try a known-good replacement charger
- Check if the AC adapter LED lights up
- If laptop is plugged in but battery icon shows "not charging" — likely a battery issue
- If charge drops fast or shuts off without warning — battery is failing
