Computer Keeps Freezing or Locking Up?
Random freezes and lockups point to a few common culprits — usually RAM, storage, drivers, or overheating. Lets narrow it down.
Try These First
Frequent freezing usually has a single underlying cause. Walking through these checks helps identify whether it is hardware (RAM, drive, overheating) or software (drivers, malware).
- Note when it freezes — every few minutes, only with certain apps, etc.
- Check temperatures — overheating causes freezes
- Run Windows Memory Diagnostic to test RAM
- Check hard drive health and free space
- Update or roll back graphics drivers
- Run a malware scan
- If it freezes on the BIOS/boot screen — likely hardware
