External Hard Drive Not Showing Up?
When an external drive is not detected, it could be the cable, the port, the drive enclosure, or the drive itself. Here is how to test.
Try These First
External drives often fail at the cable or port before the drive itself. Test cheap things first before assuming drive failure.
- Try a different USB cable
- Try a different USB port (use USB 3.0 directly on PC, not hub)
- Try the drive on a different computer
- Listen — if drive spins up, internals are likely OK
- For Mac — check Disk Utility for the drive
- For Windows — check Disk Management
- If drive shows but cannot be opened — file system issue (recoverable)
- If drive does not spin or click loudly — drive failure (call us for recovery)
