Screen Flickering? Here Is What To Check
A flickering screen can be a cable, a driver, a setting, or hardware. Here is how to figure out which.
Try These First
Most flickering is solvable without replacing hardware. The diagnostic is straightforward — narrow it to display, cable, or settings.
- Check refresh rate (right-click desktop > Display Settings > Advanced)
- Update graphics driver
- Try a different cable (HDMI, DisplayPort)
- Test on a different monitor
- For laptops — check if flicker happens at all angles (suggests cable)
- Disable hardware acceleration in browsers
- Run in Safe Mode — if flicker stops, software issue
- For monitors with backlight flicker — likely needs replacement
