Computer Will Not Turn On? Try These Steps
A computer that will not turn on can mean a dozen different things — some easy fixes, some that need a tech. Walk through these checks before assuming the worst.
Try These First
A dead computer is not always a dead computer. Most of these issues turn out to be a power problem, a stuck button, or a peripheral issue rather than a fried machine.
- Confirm the power outlet works (try a lamp in it)
- Try a different power cable or adapter
- Hold the power button for 30 seconds, then release and try again
- Unplug all USB devices and external monitors, then try
- For laptops: try with the battery removed and AC only
- Listen for any beeps, fan sounds, or power lights
- If nothing — bring it in for a free diagnostic
