A slow computer is one of the most common frustrations we hear about at Naples Computers. Before you resign yourself to buying a new machine, try these 10 tips — most are free and take just a few minutes.
1. Restart Your Computer
It sounds obvious, but many people leave computers running for weeks. A restart clears temporary files, flushes RAM, and applies pending updates.
2. Free Up Disk Space
Windows and macOS need at least 10–15% free disk space to operate efficiently. If your drive is over 85% full, delete old files, empty the Recycle Bin, and uninstall unused programs.
3. Disable Startup Programs
Every program that launches at startup slows boot time. On Windows 10/11, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, click Startup, and disable anything you don’t need immediately. On Mac, go to System Settings › General › Login Items.
4. Run a Malware Scan
Malware silently consumes CPU and RAM. Run Windows Defender (built into Windows 10/11) or Malwarebytes (free) to check for infections. Malware is one of the most common causes of sudden slowdowns.
5. Update Windows or macOS
Outdated operating systems can have performance bugs fixed in later updates. Check Settings › Windows Update or System Settings › Software Update.
6. Update Your Drivers
On Windows, outdated graphics, chipset, or storage drivers can cause slowdowns. Visit your manufacturer’s website for the latest drivers or use Windows Update’s optional driver updates.
7. Clean Up Browser Extensions
Each browser extension adds overhead. Remove extensions you don’t use from Chrome, Edge, or Firefox. A bloated browser can consume gigabytes of RAM on its own.
8. Adjust Visual Effects
On Windows, search for “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows” and choose Adjust for best performance to disable animations that consume CPU resources.
9. Add More RAM
If your computer has 4 GB of RAM or less, upgrading to 8 GB or 16 GB can make an enormous difference — especially if you run multiple browser tabs, Office apps, or any video. RAM is one of the most cost-effective upgrades available.
10. Upgrade to an SSD
If your computer still has a traditional spinning hard drive (HDD), replacing it with a solid-state drive (SSD) is the single biggest performance upgrade you can make. Boot times drop from 60+ seconds to under 10 seconds.
